One

My generation grew up with the song “One is the Loneliest Number” by Three Dog Night (1967). This has become a reality in the 21st century. It seems that more and more Canadians are living alone. For the first time in history one-person households are the most common at 28%. This is a sad scenario for the future of Canada -moving to aloneness.

One can mean two diametrically opposed thoughts depending on your perspective. One can mean isolation and limitation. Living alone – no friends; no family; no community, can be an extremely desolate, unfulfilled existence. One can also mean strength and unity – UNSTOPPABLE UNITY. Living as one in the community of believers with the same heart, mind and purpose promises an unstoppable unity.

Jesus prayed, John 17:21 “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you.” Jesus knew that if we, the church, (all believers) were one we would be an unstoppable force for the gospel. Sadly, this is not the case. There is division, disagreement, quarrelling, gossip, criticism and competition throughout the body of Christ and in the local church as well. I long for the days when the church world-wide becomes a united force accomplishing great things for the Kingdom of God.

Take a look at the church in Acts. They gave “powerful witness” and God’s blessing was on them all. Acts 4:32-33 “The whole congregation of believers was united as one — one heart, one mind! They didn’t even claim ownership of their own possessions. No one said, “That’s mine; you can’t have it.” They shared everything. The apostles gave powerful witness to the resurrection of the Master Jesus, and grace was on all of them.” (The Message Translation)

Eph 4:3-6 “Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is ONE body and ONE Spirit, just as you have been called to ONE glorious hope for the future. There is ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism, and ONE God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.”

One is not lonely it is powerful! Nothing can stop a church that is one! That is UNSTOPPABLE UNITY!
